Orthodontics is that branch of dentistry which deals with the straightening of teeth and alignment of the jaws in order to improve the function, health and appearance of the mouth and face.

I. The First Appointment - Examination

The first appointment is an examination appointment which allows us to get acquainted and determine the basic nature of the problem. At this point there is insufficient information to plan treatment in detail but we can answer many of the questions which you may be concerned about such as:

  • Is treatment necessary?
  • When should it be started?
  • How long will it take?
  • How much will it cost?

If desired the procedure listed in the second appointment can be performed at the first appointment in order to save a visit to the office.

II. The Second Appointment - Records

If orthodontic treatment is indicated, further diagnostic information is required and obtained at the second appointment. This information, called records, includes the following:

  1. A thorough examination of the mouth and face including photographs.
  2. A cephalometric (or head) x-ray showing the relative position of the teeth and jaws.
  3. A panoramic x-ray showing the jaws and all of the teeth.
  4. An accurate set of models of the patient's teeth and gums.

III. The Third Appointment - Consultation

The third appointment is designed to acquaint you, in detail, with the nature and extent of the orthodontic problem and a plan of treatment based upon all of the information gathered. It is necessary to have at least one parent and the patient present at this appointment so that the objectives, methods, and duration of treatment may be clearly outlined. Any questions pertaining to the case may be answered at this appointment.

If you have any questions concerning the above please contact our office at any time.
